Shamli Train Sabotage Attempt Highlights Safety Concerns

In a concerning incident on Saturday night, alert loco-pilots averted a potential train derailment in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh.

As the Delhi-Shamli MEMU (64021) approached Shamli railway station, the crew spotted a 12-foot iron pipe, ballast, and a broken concrete tube deliberately placed on the tracks near kilometer 85-15/16. Their timely response and emergency braking prevented what could have been a catastrophic accident. This marks the fourth such sabotage attempt in Uttar Pradesh within a month, raising serious concerns about railway safety in the region. Previous incidents include attempts to derail the New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani Express and two separate incidents involving the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express and Kathgodam Express on May 19. In each case, foreign objects like ballast and wooden logs were found on the tracks, indicating a disturbing pattern of deliberate sabotage .

The frequency of these incidents has prompted authorities to intensify investigations. The Shamli Kotwali police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Government Railway Police (GRP) are actively probing the matter. An FIR has been filed against unidentified persons under Section 150 of the Railway Act, which pertains to endangering the safety of railway passengers. The vigilance of train crews has been instrumental in preventing potential disasters. In the recent Shamli incident, the Delhi-Saharanpur MEMU had passed through the same section at 9:10 PM without any issues. However, the subsequent Delhi-Shamli MEMU train, operating on the same track, encountered the obstruction at 10:16 PM. The prompt action of the loco-pilots in applying emergency brakes ensured the safety of the passengers and averted a possible derailment.

These recurring sabotage attempts underscore the need for enhanced security measures and vigilance on railway tracks. Authorities are likely to increase surveillance and tighten security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future. The cooperation of the public in reporting suspicious activities and the continued alertness of railway staff will be crucial in ensuring the safety of train operations and passengers. As investigations continue, the focus remains on identifying those responsible for these deliberate acts of sabotage and bringing them to justice. The safety of passengers and the integrity of railway operations depend on the collective efforts of authorities, railway personnel, and the public to prevent such incidents and maintain the trust and confidence in the railway system.
