Delhi Dehradun Expressway to Feature Solar Panels and Parking Spaces

The Delhi Dehradun Expressway, a significant infrastructure project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative, is set to incorporate sustainable features aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving urban mobility.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is exploring the installation of solar panels on the elevated sections of the expressway, aligning with India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070. The proposal was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister of State for Road Transport. The meeting included senior officials from NHAI, the Delhi government, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The initiative aims to harness renewable energy and reduce the environmental impact of the expressway. In addition to the solar panels, the plan includes the development of parking facilities and public amenities along the service roads between Akshardham and the Old Yamuna Bridge (Lohe-ka-Pul), wherever land is available.

This move is expected to address the pressing issue of on-road parking and congestion, particularly in areas with high commercial activity. The Gandhi Nagar-Kailash Nagar area, home to a significant wholesale textile market, has been identified as a potential location for these facilities. The availability of space along the Yamuna side offers an opportunity to create structured parking areas, thereby reducing illegal parking and improving traffic flow. The integration of solar panels and parking facilities into the Delhi Dehradun Expressway reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban planning and infrastructure development.

By incorporating renewable energy sources and addressing urban mobility challenges, the project aims to contribute to a greener and more efficient transportation network. As the project progresses, stakeholders are optimistic that these initiatives will not only enhance the functionality of the expressway but also serve as a model for future infrastructure projects that prioritize sustainability and urban well-being.
