Chennai Corporation to Set Up EV Charging at 15 Sites
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to install EV charging stations at 15 strategic locations across its 15 administrative zones.
This initiative follows a request from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited to identify suitable government-owned lands in high-traffic areas for EV infrastructure development. The GCC has earmarked sites including beaches, parks, playgrounds, lakesides, and other vacant government lands to facilitate the installation. Key locations selected include the Chennai Egmore National Art Gallery, Magaral Park in Ambattur, and Chetpet Eco Park and Bougainvilla Park in Anna Nagar. Additional sites in the Teynampet zone include Semmozhi Park, Nageswara Rao Park, and Marina Beach parking.
In the Adyar zone, charging points will be established at Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple parking, Thiruvanmiyur Beach parking, and Besant Nagar parking. Two sites in Kodambakkam – Somasudharam Ground and Chennai Corporation playground – are also part of the plan. The move addresses a notable increase in EV adoption, particularly among lower-middle and middle-income residents shifting to electric two-wheelers. During a recent Chennai Corporation Council meeting, several councillors supported providing free public EV charging, citing relief for working-class commuters. However, Chennai Mayor R. Priya clarified that while installation work will commence soon, the charging service will not be free of cost.
The planned EV charging network is expected to enhance convenience for EV users and align with Tamil Nadu’s broader goals to promote sustainable urban mobility.
