Indore, often celebrated as India’s cleanest city, is poised to revolutionise its urban mobility with the inauguration of its first metro service on May 31, 2025.
The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has announced that commuters can enjoy free rides for the first week, followed by a tiered discount structure over the subsequent three months. The initial operational phase covers a 6-kilometre stretch of the Yellow Line, known as the Super Priority Corridor, encompassing five key stations from Gandhi Nagar to Super Corridor 3. Trains will operate from 8 AM to 8 PM at 30-minute intervals, making 25 trips daily in each direction.
To encourage public adoption, the MPMRCL has structured promotional fares: free rides in the first week, 75% discount in the second week, 50% in the third week, and a 25% discount up to the third month. The fare for the initial stretch ranges from ₹20 to ₹30, with the broader Yellow Line, spanning 28 stations over 31.32 km, having fare slabs between ₹20 and ₹80. In its commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, the Indore Metro features air-conditioned coaches with a capacity of up to 980 passengers per train, lifts and escalators at stations, Braille signs and tactile tiles for differently-abled passengers, CCTV cameras, emergency buttons, intercoms, audio announcements for visually impaired passengers, wheelchair access, seating areas, toilets, and drinking water facilities.
Initially, ticketing will be manual due to a review of the contract with a Türkiye-based company assigned for automatic fare collection. The MPMRCL is also collaborating with AICTSL to integrate bus services, enhancing last-mile connectivity for metro commuters. The Indore Metro project, with a total cost of approximately ₹7,500 crore, signifies a significant stride towards modern, eco-friendly urban transportation, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and pollution while enhancing commuter comfort.
