BLW Adds Waterless Urinals in 39 Locomotives

Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has introduced waterless urinals in 39 locomotives under the ‘Clean and Safe Toilets’ initiative.

The installations include 37 WAG-9 freight locomotives and two WAP-7 passenger locomotives. According to a BLW spokesperson, the move not only improves sanitation standards for railway staff but also reinforces the Indian Railways’ commitment to environmental sustainability. The dry urinal systems conserve water and are designed to fit into a compact 180 mm-deep space within the locomotive cabs, ensuring accessibility without compromising structural design.

In addition to the urinals, the modified locomotives have also been equipped with new CO₂ cylinder fittings and enhanced hand brakes, further strengthening onboard safety and operational reliability. Officials describe the step as a significant contribution to the broader goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the Green Rail initiative, both of which advocate eco-conscious practices across India’s transport infrastructure. In a related development, the North Central Railway (NCR) has announced the expansion of the Banaras-Agra Cantt Vande Bharat Express from eight to sixteen carriages in response to rising passenger demand.

The extended trainset for services 20175/20176 will begin operating from May 29.
