Shillong-Silchar Highway to Boost Northeast Connectivity

Indian government has approved the construction of a 166.8-kilometre four-lane highway linking Shillong in Meghalaya to Silchar in Assam.

This strategic infrastructure project aims to reduce the region’s dependence on the narrow Siliguri Corridor and foster economic growth by connecting to the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) in Myanmar. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will oversee the project’s implementation, with completion expected by 2030. Once operational, the highway will significantly cut travel time between Shillong and Silchar from 8.5 hours to approximately 5 hours, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.

The Shillong-Silchar highway is poised to become a vital link in India’s Act East Policy, providing an alternative route to the northeastern states via Myanmar. By connecting to the KMTTP, the highway will enable cargo movement from Kolkata and Visakhapatnam ports to the Northeast through the Sittwe port in Myanmar, followed by inland waterways and road networks. This development comes in response to recent geopolitical dynamics, including statements from Bangladeshi officials asserting control over the region’s access to the sea. By establishing a direct route through Myanmar, India aims to mitigate strategic vulnerabilities and ensure uninterrupted connectivity for its northeastern states.

The project will traverse challenging hilly terrain, necessitating advanced engineering solutions such as slope stabilization, rock anchors, and protective walls to prevent landslides. Modern monitoring equipment, including piezometers and inclinometers, will be deployed to ensure the highway’s safety and resilience. Constructed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), the highway will feature 19 major bridges, 153 minor bridges, 326 culverts, 22 underpasses, 26 overpasses, eight limited-height subways, and 34 viaducts. This comprehensive infrastructure is expected to catalyze economic activity in the region, promoting sustainable development and regional integration.

The Kaladan project, funded by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, has faced delays due to internal conflicts in Myanmar. However, recent diplomatic efforts have renewed optimism for its completion, which is crucial for the success of the Shillong-Silchar highway as a trade corridor. By investing in this high-speed corridor, India demonstrates its commitment to fostering inclusive growth, enhancing regional connectivity, and reducing environmental impact through efficient transportation networks. The Shillong-Silchar highway stands as a testament to India’s strategic vision for a more connected and prosperous Northeast.
