BMC Offers Free Shadu Clay for Ganeshotsav 2025

In a bid to promote a sustainable Ganeshotsav in 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the free distribution of Shadu clay to artisans making eco-friendly Ganpati idols.

The civic body also confirmed that temporary pavilion spaces for idol-making will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. The initiative follows recent court directives enforcing a ban on Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, citing environmental concerns. PoP has long been criticised for its non-biodegradable properties and negative impact on water bodies during idol immersion. The BMC’s new measures aim to encourage the adoption of traditional Shadu clay, which dissolves more easily and has a lesser environmental footprint. While the move has been lauded by environmental groups, it has also raised concerns among festival organisers.

The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGSS), a coordinating body of Ganesh mandals, welcomed the BMC’s eco-friendly efforts but cautioned that a complete ban on PoP might hinder the creation of larger idols, often central to traditional celebrations. “We respect the court’s directive and fully support eco-friendly celebrations,” said BSGSS President Adv. Naresh Dahibhavkar. “However, Shadu clay lacks the structural integrity required for idols that stand up to 18 feet tall. The prohibition may affect not just Ganeshotsav, but also Sharadotsav and Maghi Ganeshotsav later in the year.” The committee has urged the government and civic authorities to consider developing eco-friendly alternatives to PoP that can maintain cultural traditions while aligning with environmental goals.

For now, BMC has reiterated its commitment to supporting artisans by offering both materials and workspace, underscoring the city’s push for a greener festival season.
