Pune gears up for SPPU double decker flyover launch
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has confirmed that the much-anticipated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk is on track for a June 30 opening, promising significant traffic relief on Ganeshkhind Road and nearby junctions.
Designed as a two-tier structure, the upper deck will carry the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line, while the lower deck will facilitate vehicular movement. Once operational, the flyover is expected to ease congestion at key points including University Circle, Aundh, Baner, Pashan, and Senapati Bapat Road. Construction milestones have been largely met. All 32 supporting pillars are in place, and major steel girders have been installed across critical spans, with sections near E-Square and Baner Road nearly complete.
The Aundh and Shivajinagar ramps are slated for public access by May 20, while full completion of the Aundh ramp is expected by mid-June. Although the original completion deadline was May 2025, delays due to land acquisition and utility relocation pushed the target to late June. Work on the Pashan-side ramps is still in progress and may extend beyond the initial launch.
Part of Pune’s broader infrastructure upgrade, the flyover also includes future integration with Bus Rapid Transit (BRTS) and pedestrian connectivity, reinforcing the city’s push for multimodal urban mobility.
