Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a Rs55 billion project to convert 28,000 agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar power.
This initiative, announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to alleviate the energy challenges faced by farmers in the province.The project is a joint effort between the federal and provincial governments, with the federal government contributing 70% of the funding and the Balochistan government covering the remaining 30%. This collaboration underscores the commitment to addressing energy shortages and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of this initiative during the announcement, highlighting that the solarization of tube wells will provide farmers with a reliable and cost-effective energy source.
He noted that many tube wells in Balochistan currently operate for limited hours due to electricity constraints, affecting agricultural productivity. The transition to solar power is expected to ensure uninterrupted water supply for irrigation, thereby enhancing crop yields and supporting the livelihoods of farmers.
