Kolkata Metro Green Line nears full rollout Howrah and Salt Lake link soon

Train operations along the full stretch of Kolkata Metro’s Green Line — from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan — are set to begin shortly, as the Ministry of Railways speeds up final clearances and operational readiness.

The long-awaited corridor will finally offer direct metro connectivity between Howrah and Sealdah, modernising Kolkata’s transport network and easing commuter pressure across the city. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for the NF Circle, Sumeet Singhal, recently conducted a detailed inspection of the Esplanade–Sealdah stretch — the final remaining segment before the full East-West corridor becomes operational. His review included a comprehensive assessment of the track infrastructure, tunnel safety, ventilation systems, train operation protocols, and emergency response mechanisms. Such inspections are mandatory before any metro section is officially cleared for passenger use.

Currently, the Kolkata Metro Green Line — also called the East-West Metro — functions in two parts: Green Line-1 from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah, and Green Line-2 from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. Once CRS approval is secured, the Sealdah–Esplanade segment will bridge the existing gap, enabling uninterrupted travel across the entire 16.6-kilometre stretch. Officials expect this expansion to greatly reduce travel time and improve access across key residential and commercial areas of Kolkata. With a modern underground and elevated rail network, the Green Line is poised to transform how people commute between the tech hub of Salt Lake, the business heart of Esplanade, and the transit-heavy zones of Howrah and Sealdah.

The project has been hailed as a landmark in Kolkata’s urban transit evolution. Once completed, it will offer seamless multimodal connections to Indian Railways at Howrah and Sealdah stations, further boosting its value to daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
