Southern Railway Launches Superfast Chennai Rajasthan Express to Boost Regional Connectivity

Indian Railways has flagged off a new superfast train connecting Chennai in Tamil Nadu to Bhagat Ki Kothi in Rajasthan. The five-day-a-week service, sanctioned by the Railway Board, marks a significant stride in reducing the physical and economic distance between India’s southern and north-western regions.

Designed with modern coaches and halts at strategic locations, the initiative is expected to serve both economic imperatives and passenger convenience while supporting the broader goal of sustainable inter-state transport. Operational from May 5, the new long-haul express train number 20625—originates from Dr. MGR Chennai Central and terminates at Bhagat Ki Kothi near Jodhpur. The return service (train 20626) ensures continuity with similar frequency. Traversing major junctions across five states Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Gujarat the train reduces travel time and enhances logistical connectivity for business, tourism, and family travel alike. The introduction of this express route is in line with Indian Railways’ overarching objective of expanding cross-regional access without compromising travel comfort or affordability.

With a total travel time of approximately 40 hours, the train schedule has been crafted to maximise usability during peak days. The Chennai-bound service operates every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, while the return leg runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Equipped with multi-class coaches, the train accommodates travellers from all walks of life offering affordable sleeper berths as well as premium AC options. Notably, all coaches are outfitted with energy-efficient lighting, charging ports, and improved ventilation demonstrating a shift towards sustainable rail infrastructure.

Beyond passenger benefits, this rail link is expected to have multiplier effects on trade and cultural exchanges between the southern and northern belts of India. States along the route stand to gain from increased footfall, business activity, and employment generated through ancillary rail services. The Southern Railway’s decision to operationalise this cross-country corridor underscores a renewed focus on inclusive and environmentally responsible mobility, replacing high-emission modes of transport such as buses and private vehicles with rail a relatively low-carbon alternative.

Advance bookings have already commenced, reflecting the high anticipation among passengers keen on exploring this seamless travel option. By enabling improved access across distant geographies, the service also reflects India’s ambition of building equitable transport networks that integrate economies while preserving ecological responsibility. The Chennai Bhagat Ki Kothi Superfast Express stands as a testament to this ethos, promising more than just speed it offers connectivity rooted in vision, inclusion, and sustainability.
