Indrayani River Pollution Sparks Public Outrage

Residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad staged a protest on Sunday, May 4, at the banks of the Indrayani River near Moi Phata, voicing their concerns over the escalating pollution levels in the river.

The protestors highlighted the detrimental impact of untreated sewage and industrial effluents on the river’s health and the surrounding communities.
The Indrayani River, a vital water source and a site of religious significance, has been grappling with severe pollution issues. The Ramzhara stream, which merges with the Indrayani River at Moi Phata, has transformed into a sewer, laden with construction debris, plastic waste, and contaminated water.
Despite previous actions by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) against scrap dealers in Kudalwadi and Chikhali, the pollution persists. Residents and environmental activists argue that the administration’s efforts have been insufficient and lack a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of pollution.

The river’s pollution poses serious health risks to residents and pilgrims who consume its water for religious purposes. The discharge of untreated sewage into the river exacerbates the situation, leading to concerns about waterborne diseases and environmental degradation.Protestors have demanded immediate action from the authorities to clean the river, treat sewage water before its release, and preserve the river’s natural flow. They also raised concerns about the riverfront development project initiated by PCMC, which, according to them, prioritizes beautification over addressing pollution issues.

The protest reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of environmental concerns and the need for a more sustainable and inclusive approach to urban development. As the situation unfolds, the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad continue to advocate for the preservation of the Indrayani River, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship for the well-being of current and future generations.
