Bengaluru is on the brink of a significant urban transformation with the much-anticipated launch of the Yellow Line under the Namma Metro project.
Expected to commence operations by the end of June or early July, this 19.15 km stretch will provide crucial connectivity to the city’s bustling tech hub, Electronic City, while contributing to the city’s sustainable transport ecosystem. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is currently in the final stages of preparation, focusing on obtaining regulatory clearances and conducting essential operational tests. According to senior BMRCL officials, the project is nearing completion, with regulatory approvals, including oscillation trials and signalling tests, underway. These are critical to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the new metro line.
The officials confirmed that the project has already received two of the planned trains, with a third expected by the end of April. This train will be brought from Kolkata, where final assembly and quality checks are being conducted. The approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) is anticipated by the end of April, paving the way for commercial operations. The Yellow Line, stretching from RV Road to Bommasandra, is designed to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion that plagues Bengaluru’s IT corridors. The metro line will not only improve commute times but also reduce the city’s carbon footprint, aligning with the broader goal of creating zero net carbon, eco-friendly, and sustainable urban infrastructure. The trains on the Yellow Line are being manufactured by CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co., Ltd., under a ₹1,578 crore contract signed in 2019. While the prototype trains were built in China, the remaining units are under construction in Teetagarh Rail Systems Limited, West Bengal. A total of 36 trains with 216 coaches have been commissioned, with 15 trains allocated to the Yellow Line and the rest serving the Green and Purple Lines.
The Yellow Line’s key stations include RV Road, Bommasandra, Electronic City, Bommanahalli, Koramangala, and Hosur Road. These stations are strategically located to enhance access to critical business districts, educational institutions, and residential areas, fostering inclusive urban mobility. Urban transport experts highlight that the Yellow Line will play a pivotal role in Bengaluru’s journey towards becoming a model city for sustainable living. The metro’s electric-powered system significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promoting cleaner air and a healthier environment.
Moreover, the Yellow Line’s introduction complements Bengaluru’s broader push towards eco-friendly urban solutions. This includes initiatives like the development of green corridors, smart waste management systems, and the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) within the city. The BMRCL is also working on enhancing passenger experience through state-of-the-art amenities at metro stations, such as energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and digital information boards. These features reflect the commitment to building gender-neutral, equitable, and accessible infrastructure that caters to the needs of all citizens.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the Yellow Line is expected to stimulate economic growth along its corridor. Improved connectivity will attract investments, boost real estate development, and create job opportunities, contributing to Bengaluru’s status as a leading global tech hub. As Bengaluru gears up for the launch of the Yellow Line, the focus remains on ensuring that the metro system not only meets the demands of a growing population but also aligns with the city’s vision of becoming a sustainable, future-ready metropolis. With the final preparations in motion, Bengaluru is set to redefine urban mobility and environmental responsibility through its latest metro expansion.
