BLW Sets Record with 477 Locomotives in 2024-25

Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has set a new benchmark in the Indian railway sector by producing a record 477 locomotives during the financial year 2024-25.

This achievement not only marks the highest production in a single fiscal year but also underscores BLW’s growing role in advancing India’s sustainable transport agenda. Of the total locomotives manufactured, 472 were electric, catering to the increasing demand for eco-friendly transport solutions under Indian Railways’ decarbonisation goals. The remaining five diesel locomotives were produced for domestic clients, reflecting BLW’s diversified production capabilities. According to senior officials, the achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of BLW’s workforce, which includes a significant number of women workers. The production milestone has been credited to streamlined manufacturing processes, improved operational efficiency, and robust project management practices. The Ministry of Railways has set an ambitious target for BLW to produce 500 electric locomotives in the upcoming financial year, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to meeting India’s carbon-neutral targets. BLW’s success in surpassing its previous records has instilled confidence among stakeholders, with officials optimistic about achieving the next year’s target as well.

BLW’s legacy in locomotive manufacturing is substantial, with a cumulative production of over 10,687 locomotives, including 2,367 electric units. The milestone of producing its 10,000th locomotive was celebrated in December 2023, with the locomotive dedicated to the nation, marking a significant moment in Indian railway history. In addition to its production achievements, BLW has consistently focused on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The organisation has made considerable strides in energy conservation by maximising the use of solar energy, which has led to a 23.25% reduction in grid electricity consumption. This effort earned BLW the Energy Conservation Award from the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). BLW’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond energy efficiency. The organisation has implemented rainwater harvesting systems, including ponds and soak pits, to conserve groundwater and reduce water wastage. This initiative ensures the preservation of thousands of litres of rainwater annually, contributing to broader ecological conservation efforts.

Moreover, BLW’s excellence has been recognised through the Railway Minister’s Rajbhasha Shield, awarded for outstanding promotion and use of Hindi in official communications. This reflects the organisation’s dedication not only to industrial growth but also to cultural and linguistic inclusivity. As India continues its journey towards becoming a zero-carbon economy, BLW’s achievements stand as a beacon of sustainable industrial growth. The record production of 477 locomotives is more than just a numbers game it signifies a leap towards greener, cleaner, and more efficient transport solutions that align with India’s broader environmental and development goals.

With a clear focus on sustainability, energy conservation, and operational excellence, BLW continues to be a pivotal player in shaping the future of Indian rail transport. Its commitment to eco-friendly practices and technological innovation sets a strong precedent for other public sector enterprises striving for excellence in sustainable development.
