Hyderabad drafts Mega Master Plan to shape global city vision
The Telangana government has embarked on a transformative journey to redefine Hyderabad’s urban landscape with the ambitious Mega Master Plan-2050. This comprehensive roadmap aims to position the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region (HMR) as a world-class global city, integrating sustainable development, economic expansion, and infrastructural innovation.
Announcing the initiative in the Legislative Assembly, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu highlighted the Congress-led government’s strategic vision for urban growth. The state has already expanded the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) from 7,257 square kilometres to 10,472 square kilometres, a move expected to facilitate holistic development. The HMDA has been entrusted with the responsibility of devising sectoral plans to propel the region’s progress. The Mega Master Plan-2050 will serve as Hyderabad’s guiding framework for the next three decades, incorporating cutting-edge infrastructure, resilient urban mobility, and sustainable urbanisation principles. The plan envisions a future where economic development is seamlessly integrated with environmental stewardship, ensuring equitable growth for all sections of society. “This is not just a blueprint for expansion but a vision to transform Hyderabad into a global metropolis,” Sridhar Babu stated, underscoring the government’s long-term commitment to the city’s evolution.
In tandem with this master plan, the Congress government has accelerated major urban projects that promise to redefine Hyderabad’s urban identity. The Musi River Rejuvenation Project, Future City initiative, Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR), Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-2, and the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) Project are among the flagship developments designed to enhance connectivity and improve living standards. The H-CITI project alone, with a budget of Rs 7,032 crore, is set to modernise city infrastructure through road expansions, construction of flyovers and underpasses, and extensive stormwater drainage upgrades.
Hyderabad’s economic trajectory also remains on an upward spiral, with Telangana attracting a staggering Rs 2.9 lakh crore in investments between December 2023 and March 2025. These investments have translated into 91,000 employment opportunities, reinforcing the state’s emergence as a key economic hub. The World Economic Forum (WEF) summits at Davos, alongside strategic international outreach in the US, South Korea, and Singapore, have yielded substantial commitments. The WEF Davos 2025 summit alone secured Rs 1.78 lakh crore in investments, while the US and South Korea delegations brought in Rs 34,500 crore. Hyderabad has also cemented its position as a global corporate centre, now hosting 20 per cent of India’s Global Capability Centres (GCCs). Over the past year, 70 new GCCs have been established, with major expansions from industry giants such as Microsoft, Cognizant, HCL, Infosys, and Wipro. The life sciences sector has seen an unprecedented boom, with more than 140 new projects worth Rs 36,000 crore, including the expansion of Genome Valley and Green Pharma City, which alone secured Rs 10,705 crore in investments from 17 companies.
In the manufacturing sector, Hyderabad’s industrial prowess continues to expand. Investments from Hyundai, Premier Energies, Lenskart, JSW, and Tata-Safran have reinforced Telangana’s reputation as a preferred destination for industries. The NIMZ Zaheerabad industrial zone, spanning 3,400 acres, has attracted Rs 2,500 crore in investment, while industrial corridors along the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway are set to accelerate economic activity in the region. The Congress government’s strategic urban and industrial initiatives, anchored in the Mega Master Plan-2050, represent a paradigm shift in urban governance. By prioritising sustainable development, resilient infrastructure, and economic inclusivity, Telangana is poised to redefine Hyderabad’s identity as a leading global city, setting a benchmark for equitable urban growth in India.
