Major Mumbai Coastal Highway Set for Five-Year Maintenance Overhaul
The five-year maintenance contract for Mumbai’s coastal road is valued at INR 85 crore. This high-speed corridor, spanning 10.6 km, has been gradually opening in phases and was previously maintained by city authorities. The new contract covers various responsibilities, including regular inspections, maintenance of firefighting systems, towing services, deployment of patrolling vans, lane markings, and upkeep of road signs. According to officials, funds allocated to the coastal road department will be used to finance these maintenance efforts.
Certain critical components, such as the tunnel ventilation system, diesel generators, real-time data monitoring systems, and uninterruptible power supply units, will remain under the current contractor’s management for an additional two years before being integrated into the new contract. This phased transition is aimed at ensuring smooth operations and continuity. In addition to maintenance, efforts are underway to enhance the aesthetics of the corridor. Authorities have partnered with private companies to improve road
dividers along a 4.4 km stretch. Further, corporate support is being sought to develop open spaces along the route, making the area more visually appealing and functional for commuters. With sections of the road becoming operational, structured maintenance and beautification projects are expected to improve infrastructure and public spaces. These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to enhance one of Mumbai’s key transport corridors while ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency.
