Ahmedabad Rs 14,001 Cr Plan LRT, Green Cover, and Sports Boost
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has unveiled an ambitious Rs 14,001 crore draft budget for 2025-26, setting the stage for a transformative urban overhaul. The plan outlines 550 km of new and redeveloped roads, 36 thematic roads spanning 72.55 km, and a feasibility study for a Light Rail Transport (LRT) system, all aimed at modernising the city’s transport and civic infrastructure. With Rs 1,000 crore earmarked for the Sabarmati Riverfront’s third phase and Rs 2,300 crore allocated for 15,000 affordable housing units, the city is poised for large-scale urban regeneration. Alongside these, a strategic expansion in healthcare, fire safety, and recreational facilities highlights AMC’s vision of a sustainable and future-ready Ahmedabad.
The transport infrastructure is set to receive a major push with Rs 25 crore allocated for 100 new traffic junctions, an adaptive traffic control system, and 37 gantry direction signboards at key entry points. Thematic roads—dedicated to healthcare, education, business, heritage, and sports—will redefine Ahmedabad’s mobility landscape, ensuring streamlined movement in high-traffic zones. The feasibility of an LRT system, akin to trams, will be explored, aiming to complement existing Metro and BRTS networks. In a bid to improve last-mile connectivity, 100 mini electric buses will be introduced, along with 200 e-buses for urban transit. The city’s public transport fleet will further expand with the addition of 120 AC electric buses and a Multi-Modal Transport Hub at RTO circle.
Sustainability takes centre stage in AMC’s draft budget, with Rs 20 crore allocated for revamping 28 gardens and developing 22 new ones. A 100-acre biodiversity park in Gyaspur and a 2,200 sqm tropical forest on the Sabarmati Riverfront mark the city’s commitment to urban greening. Renewable energy projects, including wind and solar power plants, will enhance Ahmedabad’s transition towards a carbon-neutral future. Additionally, a Heat Action Plan (HAP) will identify urban heat island zones, mitigating the impact of rising temperatures. AMC’s green initiatives align with India’s net-zero goals, reinforcing Ahmedabad’s reputation as a forward-thinking, sustainable urban hub.
A human-centric approach is evident in the city’s renewed focus on public welfare. The healthcare sector will see the addition of five Urban Health Centres, taking the total to 100, while existing hospitals will receive new MRI and foetal medicine facilities. Fire safety infrastructure will be bolstered with three new fire stations and a fire chowki in Vatva GIDC. In an effort to enhance the city’s cultural and recreational appeal, AMC plans to develop a Science and Future Museum, open sports complexes, amusement parks, and an exhibition-performance centre along the riverfront. With urban renewal projects such as the redevelopment of Bhadra Plaza and Gaekwad Haveli, Ahmedabad is set to witness a historic transformation in both its built and natural environment.
