KSRTC to Launch Double-Decker Bus Service in Kochi for Tourists in January 2025

KSRTC to Launch Double-Decker Bus Service in Kochi for Tourists in January 2025

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is all set to launch its double-decker bus service in the city during the first week of January 2025. This new service will cater exclusively to tourists, offering them an exciting new way to explore the city’s top attractions.

The route, initially planned to cover a 12.5 km stretch, will connect key destinations in the city including the High Court, Madhava Pharmacy Junction, Jos Junction, Shipyard, Thevara, Naval Base, Toll Bridge, Mattancherry, and Fort Kochi. However, before the route is finalised, a trial run will be conducted to ensure smooth operations. In case of any unexpected traffic congestion or time-related issues, KSRTC officials are prepared to consider alternative routes. “We plan to operate six trips a day on this route. If the service proves popular, we will explore the possibility of extending it to the night,” said a senior KSRTC official. The officials also noted that the bus service’s final route will depend on various factors, such as road conditions and public feedback.

The KSRTC has been conducting feasibility studies for several possible routes, including one to Tripunithura. However, obstacles such as the metro viaduct, which presents a height limitation of 4.5 meters, have delayed finalising the route. The double-decker buses, being tall vehicles, can only operate on roads without overhead obstructions. The officials are working diligently to resolve these challenges to ensure that the service can begin on time. Currently, the Fort Kochi-Mattancherry stretch is undergoing adjustments, including the removal of hanging cables, to ensure the bus can pass through smoothly. This is part of a larger effort to enhance the city’s infrastructure for the new service, which has been introduced as a “budget tour package” to help KSRTC manage its financial concerns.

In addition to the double-decker buses, KSRTC is taking further steps to upgrade Kochi’s public transport system. The corporation plans to introduce 11 new electric buses to enhance connectivity within the city. These buses will operate on circular routes, boosting travel options for commuters while also contributing to environmental sustainability. Kochi Next Forum, a local social collective, has submitted recommendations to KSRTC, suggesting 14 circular routes and six radial routes for the city’s public transport network. Some of the suggested circular routes include the Ernakulam bus stand – Marine Drive – Gandhinagar stretch, MG Road – Vaduthala – Chittoor, and Fort Kochi – Aroor – Vyttila. Additionally, the radial routes proposed cover areas such as Aluva Metro to Perumbavoor, and Vypeen to Cherai.

These recommendations highlight the growing demand for a more comprehensive and efficient transport network in Kochi, and KSRTC officials have expressed their willingness to add more routes based on public demand. The double-decker bus initiative and the introduction of electric buses are part of a broader vision by KSRTC to modernise and expand Kochi’s transport infrastructure. These projects aim not only to enhance tourism but also to provide better, more sustainable travel options for the city’s residents. With the continued efforts to improve public transport, the city is set to experience better connectivity, reduced travel costs, and a more eco-friendly transport system. KSRTC’s focus on addressing the financial challenges through innovative initiatives like the double-decker buses is a positive step towards improving public services. As the city continues to grow, these changes are expected to contribute significantly to both the tourism and daily commuter experience in Kochi.
