In a major development impacting several key areas of Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has announced a 24-hour water disruption in Ambernath, Badlapur, and Ulhasnagar due to urgent repair work at the Jambhul Water Treatment Plant. The plant, which processes water sourced from the Barvi Dam, will be closed until 12 midnight on Friday, December 27, leading to a temporary halt in the water supply.
The Barvi Dam, a crucial water source for the region, releases water by gravity into the Ulhas River, from where it is pumped to the Jambhul center for treatment. Once treated, the water is distributed to several areas, including Ambernath, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Badlapur, and surrounding industrial estates. The disruption at the Jambhul Water Treatment Plant, caused by necessary repairs to the gravity channel, has significant ramifications for all areas reliant on this water source. Affected areas include Ambernath Municipal Council, the Badlapur Industrial Area, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, as well as rural settlements and villages dependent on the water supply from this treatment center. MIDC has informed residents and businesses that, for the duration of the repair work, water will be available at very low pressure. Furthermore, the authorities have urged the public to conserve water during this period to minimise the impact of the disruption.
In an official press release, MIDC has reassured residents that the repair work is essential for the continued smooth functioning of the water supply system. While the immediate inconvenience may be challenging for local residents, the repairs are expected to improve the overall water treatment process in the long term. Once the work is completed, regular water supply will be restored. As the repair work progresses, the residents of Ambernath, Badlapur, and Ulhasnagar are advised to stay updated on the situation through local announcements and ensure they manage their water resources efficiently during the outage. MIDC has committed to restoring full water supply by Friday midnight.
