Hyderabad Water Board Fines Dairy Firm Rs 20,000 for Misuse

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has fined Akshayakalpa Farms and Foods Pvt Ltd Rs 20,000 after officials found potable water being used to wash floors at the company’s office in Jubilee Hills.

The violation was detected at the firm’s premises in Journalist Colony, Road No. 70. Along with imposing the penalty, the water board temporarily disconnected the building’s sewage connection, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle citing HMWSSB officials.

The action forms part of a wider citywide drive to prevent the misuse of drinking water ahead of summer, when demand for water typically rises. The board has said inspections will continue across Hyderabad and that establishments found violating its directions will face strict action.

HMWSSB has advised households and commercial establishments to reserve potable water for drinking and cooking. For activities such as floor washing, vehicle cleaning, gardening and construction, the board has asked users to switch to treated water supplied from sewage treatment plants wherever it is available.

The enforcement action highlights the distinction between drinking-water supply and non-potable urban water use. Commercial premises, construction sites and other establishments often require water for cleaning and maintenance, but the board’s directive is intended to reduce the use of treated drinking water for those purposes.

The temporary sewage disconnection is an additional measure taken against the company, beyond the financial penalty. The supplied report does not specify the duration of the disconnection or the conditions for restoring the connection.

HMWSSB officials said inspections would continue in all parts of Hyderabad. The board has urged water users to comply with its directions as the city enters a period of increased demand.
