Indore Concert Faces Song Restrictions Over Child Safety Concerns

Four songs by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh have been barred from his scheduled November 15 concert in Indore after officials raised concerns that lyrics promoting alcohol and violence could adversely affect children and other attendees.

The songs named by officials are “Patiala Peg”, “5 Tara Theke”, “Jeb Vicho Feem” and “Jatt Fire Karda”. The district child protection officer issued directions to the manager of the concert venue following a complaint by Chandigarh-based Dr Punditrao Dharenavar, officials said.

The letter sent to the venue manager stated that children above the age of five would be allowed to attend the live concert and that the songs could have an adverse impact on them. The direction places responsibility on the concert venue to ensure that the listed songs are not performed during the event.

The communication referred to a July 22, 2019, order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. That order directed police in Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to ensure that songs glorifying liquor, wine, drugs and violence were not played, including during live performances. The court had also highlighted the possible impact of such songs on young children.

In his complaint, Dharenavar urged Indore authorities to prohibit Dosanjh from performing the four songs even if their lyrics were altered. He also sought restrictions on the singer inviting children on stage during the concert and wearing two crossed silver bullet belts, also known as bandoliers, or dummy metallic silver cartridges on his chest during the live show.

The reported direction comes ahead of a ticketed public event where organisers, venue managers and district authorities must coordinate access and audience-safety arrangements. The available report does not specify how the restrictions will be enforced, whether the singer’s management has responded, or whether the concert schedule itself will change. The November 15 performance remains the scheduled event referred to in the officials’ communication.
