Cochin Carnival Expands as Kochi Plans for Bigger New Year Crowds

The Cochin Carnival will be organised on a larger scale this year, with Kochi authorities preparing additional arrangements for crowds expected to exceed last year’s turnout of around eight lakh people. The main events will be held from December 27 to 31 at Veli Ground, Vasco da Gama Beach and Parade Ground.

The decision was taken at a preparatory meeting held in the district collector’s chamber. The meeting was attended by Muhammad Shiyas MLA, Additional District Magistrate K. Manoj and Sub-Collector Granthe Sai Krishna, among others.

Organisers are planning visual programmes intended to attract both families and young people. With the carnival expected to draw a larger crowd, the authorities have begun coordinating security, medical care, sanitation, transport, lighting and essential services across the main venues and access points.

The police will prepare a special security plan for the festival. The Health Department will deploy ambulances and medical teams to respond to emergencies. Food safety squads will inspect food outlets operating during the carnival, covering one of the key public-health requirements for a large event.

Kochi Municipal Corporation Secretary has been tasked with ensuring that an adequate number of bio-toilets are available. The arrangement is intended to support sanitation at the venues, where large crowds are expected to gather over five days.

Transport planning will include additional Kerala State Road Transport Corporation services. Ro-Ro boats will operate until 7 pm, while six boats operated by the Transport Department will continue services until later in the night. Lighting and police protection will be provided at boat jetties to support movement after evening programmes and improve safety around the waterfront transport network.

The Kerala State Electricity Board will be responsible for ensuring uninterrupted power supply, while the Kerala Water Authority will arrange drinking water. These services will be important for the venues and associated public areas during the peak carnival period.

The planned locations place the event across waterfront and open-ground spaces in Kochi, making crowd movement between venues a central operational requirement. The transport and jetty arrangements indicate that authorities are preparing for visitors using both road-based and water-based connections.

The latest preparations follow last year’s reported participation of approximately eight lakh people. The authorities have not yet announced a detailed programme schedule or specific crowd limits for each venue. The police security plan, additional bus services, boat operations and civic-service arrangements are expected to define the final operational framework before the December 27 opening.
