Private Bus Inspections Tighten in Tripunithura After Fatal Crash

The Motor Vehicles Department has begun inspections of private buses in Tripunithura after a fatal collision in Ernakulam, focusing on speeding, negligent driving and the use of unlicensed drivers and conductors.

The inspection was conducted by two squads operating from 7am to 7pm. Motor Vehicle Inspector Shanavas Khan and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors Deepak S. and Shibukumar led checks at the Tripunithura municipal bus stand, according to Mathrubhumi.

The enforcement drive followed a bus collision in Ernakulam the previous day in which a young woman and others were killed, the report said. Department officials stated that strong action would be taken if violations were detected during the inspections.

The checks cover whether private buses are being operated at excessive speed, whether drivers are driving negligently, and whether drivers and conductors hold the required licences. The department has not disclosed the number of violations detected or the penalties imposed during the reported inspection.

The action comes amid widespread complaints about private buses on the Tripunithura–Poothotta road. Residents and other road users have alleged that buses are travelling at high speed, sounding their horns loudly and forcing their way through traffic, creating fear among other motorists. They have also complained that effective action has not been taken against such behaviour.

The inspections place renewed attention on enforcement around private bus operations, where passenger safety depends not only on vehicle condition but also on driver conduct, licensing compliance and monitoring on busy urban roads. The Motor Vehicles Department has said further strong action will follow if offences are found.
