Sabarmati Bridges Beautification Project to Elevate Ahmedabad’s Riverfront

In a bold move to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and safety, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a Rs 65.22 crore beautification project to overhaul three key bridges on the Sabarmati River. These iconic structures—Gandhi Bridge, Dadhichi Bridge, and Sardar Bridge—are set to receive permanent steel frameworks, decorative railings, lightweight sculptures, and modern ornamental lighting. With the project in the planning stages, AMC has floated tenders for the work, with proposals due by January 17, 2024.

These bridges, which serve as crucial links in the city’s transportation network, are integral to Ahmedabad’s identity. The new designs aim to move beyond temporary festive lighting arrangements, typically seen during Diwali, and replace them with more permanent installations that enhance the bridges’ aesthetic value throughout the year. The initiative not only focuses on illuminating the structures but also incorporates artistic sculptures and customised railings, aligning with AMC’s vision of beautifying the Sabarmati Riverfront and elevating the city’s cultural and architectural landscape.

This project follows a series of safety measures put in place to address public concerns, notably the installation of protective nets on bridges after incidents of suicides. While these measures helped safeguard public health, the current beautification efforts are aimed at transforming the riverfront into a symbol of urban renewal, attracting tourists and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The success of this initiative could serve as a blueprint for future urban renewal projects across the city, with the potential for similar upgrades to other key bridges along the river.

Sustainability will also play a crucial role in these beautification plans. With Ahmedabad facing rapid urbanisation, AMC’s emphasis on permanent, energy-efficient lighting and decorative elements ensures the project aligns with sustainable urban development principles. The use of long-lasting materials and energy-efficient lighting will minimise environmental impact while maintaining the bridges’ functional and aesthetic value. This approach signifies a forward-thinking strategy for integrating sustainability into city infrastructure, ensuring that urban growth remains both responsible and beautiful.
