Bayer has signed an agreement with the Karnataka government to invest ₹200 crore in an advanced research and development centre near Bengaluru, a project the company plans to implement in phases over the next seven years and which is expected to create 220 jobs.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Karnataka Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil by Industries Department Principal Secretary S. Selvakumar and Bayer Chief Financial Officer Vineet Jindal. The investment will expand the German company’s existing presence in Bengaluru’s services and innovation ecosystem.
Patil said Bayer wanted to conduct the groundbreaking ceremony before the Global Investors’ Meet scheduled for April next year. He added that the company was keen to begin its manufacturing-related activities quickly. The source report did not provide the proposed location, land area, construction cost or a detailed project timeline beyond the seven-year investment period.
Bayer operates in the healthcare and agriculture sectors and already has a services and innovation hub in Bengaluru. It also has a crop testing centre in Chamarajanagar district. According to the information shared at the signing, the company has been present in India for 125 years and employs 11,000 people in the country.
The company’s existing Indian operations include seven manufacturing plants and three Global Enterprise Centres, according to the details cited by the Industries Department. The new research and development centre is expected to add to this network, although the announcement did not specify the research areas, planned facilities or whether the 220 jobs would be concentrated at the Bengaluru site.
The project places Bengaluru’s research infrastructure and specialised employment base within Karnataka’s wider investment-promotion strategy. Agreements of this kind typically require coordination between the industries department, land and industrial-area agencies and the investing company before construction and operations begin. In this case, officials from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board were also present at the signing.
The event was attended by Industries Department Commissioner Khushboo Goyal Chaudhary and KIADB Chief Executive Officer Govind Reddy. The next stated milestone is the proposed groundbreaking ceremony before the April Global Investors’ Meet, after which the company is expected to proceed with the project in phases. Further details on the centre’s location, facilities, investment schedule and employment distribution were not included in the announcement.
