Warangal’s drinking-water supply is facing avoidable losses from pipeline leakages, with residents urging the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) to repair damaged stretches before summer scarcity worsens across Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet.
The immediate concern is a major pipeline supplying water from Pothana Nagar towards 12 Morees, where drinking water was reported to have been flowing continuously onto the road for several hours. Residents said they contacted the authorities but that officials did not respond quickly or begin repairs.
The leakage has drawn attention because GWMC officials have said they are taking advance measures to prevent drinking-water shortages in anticipation of the El Niño effect. Residents have pointed to the continued wastage as a contradiction of appeals asking citizens to conserve water.
According to the report, pipeline leakages are common in several parts of the city. Residents said repeated complaints to the authorities have generally not produced a prompt response, raising concerns about the absence of an effective complaint-response system for critical water infrastructure.
The issue comes as people in the Greater Warangal area are worried about water availability next summer. The reservoirs supplying Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet are reported to have inadequate storage, increasing the importance of preventing losses from the distribution network.
Residents have asked the civic authorities to identify leakages proactively across the tri-cities instead of waiting for complaints. They have also demanded immediate repairs wherever water is being lost and a mechanism that ensures public complaints are recorded, monitored and acted upon quickly.
The reported leakage places the focus on the condition and responsiveness of the city’s distribution system. While residents have called for urgent repairs, the report does not specify the volume of water lost, the number of active leakages or a municipal deadline for completing repairs. The next step sought by residents is an effective GWMC-led inspection and response mechanism before the summer supply period.
