In a significant move aimed at safeguarding public green spaces, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced plans to geo-fence all parks under its jurisdiction. This measure, which will begin shortly, is expected to prevent encroachments and ensure that parks are properly maintained. The initiative also involves providing each park with a unique identification number to monitor their status and upkeep effectively. The geo-fencing of parks will further help the GHMC track any illegal activities, such as encroachments or unauthorized constructions, thus protecting these crucial green spaces for the city’s residents.
Currently, there are 1,579 parks in Hyderabad, out of which 770 are maintained by resident welfare associations (RWAs) and colony welfare associations (CWAs). The geo-fencing effort will cover all open areas marked as lung space or amenities in city layouts, many of which have been illegally encroached upon or sold under dubious circumstances. GHMC officials have stated that land parcels exceeding 2,000 square yards, identified as lung spaces, will be developed into parks. This move is not only to protect public spaces but also to prevent illegal activities that hinder urban development and public welfare.
Sustainability is at the heart of this initiative, as the geo-fencing process will aid in the preservation of Hyderabad’s green cover. The GHMC’s approach aligns with broader environmental goals, as these parks and open spaces provide essential ecosystem services, such as improving air quality, reducing urban heat islands, and promoting biodiversity. The corporation is also planning to implement measures to prevent plastic waste within park premises and to ensure that anti-social activities are curtailed with the help of security guards.
From a civic standpoint, this project aims to ensure that parks remain accessible and enjoyable for all residents, promoting public health and community well-being. By involving RWAs and CWAs in the process, the GHMC is fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among local communities.
