A Mumbai fire broke out at Annasagar Scrap Market in the Jarimari area of Sakinaka on Tuesday evening, prompting the Mumbai Fire Brigade to launch a firefighting operation after the blaze was reported among scrap material, civic officials said. No injuries have been reported so far.
The fire was reported at about 7.15 pm at the market located along Kurla-Andheri Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared it a Level-I fire and began efforts to contain the blaze, according to information shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The fire was confined to scrap material at the market, the civic authorities said. Further details about the cause of the fire, the extent of damage and the number of firefighting vehicles involved were not immediately available in the supplied report.
The response brought together multiple civic and emergency agencies. Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel, police staff, the concerned electricity distribution company, BMC ward staff and a 108 ambulance were mobilised to the site.
Scrap markets and storage areas can present operational challenges for emergency services because combustible materials may be stored in dense clusters and access routes can be constrained. In this incident, however, the civic authorities said the fire remained confined to scrap material. The report did not state whether nearby structures or businesses were evacuated.
The Sakinaka incident came shortly after another fire at a wooden warehouse in Malad West. That fire broke out at about 9 pm on November 2 at a warehouse on Anand Road, near Ruia Marriage Hall and Vallabhdas Nagraj School, and was also classified as a Level-I call.
In Malad, the fire was confined to wooden planks and cardboard stock kept on the ground floor of a ground-plus-two-storey structure. Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel, police, BMC Solid Waste Management staff and ward staff were deployed during the response. The blaze was extinguished at 1.31 am on Tuesday after firefighting operations lasting more than four hours. No injuries were reported in that incident either.
For the Sakinaka fire, the immediate official position remained that the blaze was limited to scrap material and that no injuries had been reported. Further information is expected from the civic authorities after the firefighting operation and site assessment are completed.
