India’s Net-Zero Emissions to Generate 35 mn Green Jobs

India’s ambitious drive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 is poised to create significant employment opportunities for its population. A study reveals that India is projected to generate 35 million green jobs by 2047, focusing on sectors contributing to environmental restoration and preservation.

The renewable energy sector will play a pivotal role in the green economy, with solar energy alone expected to support 3.26 million jobs by 2050. Wind energy follows closely, potentially creating 0.18 million jobs by 2030, while the bioenergy and green hydrogen sectors could employ 0.27 million and 0.6 million workers by the same year.

The report highlights that the employment opportunities in India’s green economy will predominantly be concentrated in urban and peri-urban areas, which are projected to accommodate 60 per cent of the country’s population by 2050.

India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in green growth, unlocking an estimated value of USD 1 trillion by 2030. The country experienced a remarkable 125 per cent year-on-year surge in renewable energy investments, reaching USD 14.5 billion in the last financial year.

Notably, India’s push for electric vehicles is expected to generate 10 million direct and 50 million indirect jobs by 2030, offering opportunities for a new workforce and those currently employed in the internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sector. Additionally, the shift towards sustainable textiles and construction is projected to impact 45 million and 11 million jobs, respectively.

As India charts its course towards a sustainable future, the nation’s commitment to net-zero emissions presents an unprecedented opportunity to create millions of green jobs.
