The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places across six states on November 4, with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds expected in several parts of southern, central, eastern and western India after Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Keralam and Odisha are among the areas expected to receive heavy showers, while Telangana is also under a heavy-rain forecast. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several regions. Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to remain dry on Wednesday, according to the department’s seven-day rainfall forecast.
Cyclone Murasu crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapur, close to Ongole, between 3.30am and 5.30am on November 3. At the time, the severe cyclonic storm had wind speeds of 100-110kmph, gusting up to 120kmph. The system was centred over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh at 5.30am and was expected to weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon and a deep depression by midnight.
Andhra Pradesh is likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50kmph, with gusts reaching 60kmph. Strong surface winds are also possible in isolated parts of the state. The IMD has identified a moderate flash-flood risk over some watersheds in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana until 5.30am on November 4.
The districts listed for the flash-flood risk in Andhra Pradesh are Bapatla, Guntur, NTR, Krishna, Eluru, Palnadu, Prakasam and SPSR Nellore. In Telangana, the risk covers Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool and Suryapet. The warning has implications for road movement, low-lying settlements and local drainage systems in areas receiving intense bursts of rain.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast at isolated places in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, where thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 60kmph are possible. Jharkhand is expected to receive isolated rainfall, while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya may see isolated to scattered showers. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall between November 3 and 8, although no heavy-rain warning has been listed for the Northeast on November 4.
Keralam and Mahe are likely to receive heavy rain, with thunderstorms and winds of 30-40kmph. Heavy showers are also forecast over Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50kmph, with gusts reaching 60kmph. Heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of that region from November 5 to 7.
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha. Winds may reach 40-50kmph, with gusts up to 60kmph, over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra. Vidarbha may experience thunderstorms with winds of 30-40kmph. Marathwada has not been listed under a thunderstorm warning for November 4.
The weather pattern is being influenced by multiple systems, including a Western Disturbance, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, another circulation over east Rajasthan and a circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea adjoining the Karnataka and south Maharashtra coasts. The IMD has forecast further heavy rain over parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Keralam and Mahe through November 9.
