Kolkata Metro Set to Launch Direct Train Service to NSCBI Airport Soon

Kolkata Metro prepares to launch a direct Metro link to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport. This long-awaited project will enhance connectivity for thousands of fliers in the city. The new 6.25 km stretch of the Yellow Line, from Noapara to Bimanbandar, is expected to open in 2025.

This section is part of a larger 18.13 km extension of the Yellow Line and will offer a seamless Metro service to one of the busiest airports in India. The Noapara to Bimanbandar section is now complete, and trial runs are underway. These runs are being conducted to test the readiness of the track, third rail, and other systems to ensure everything is in place for safe operations. A senior official confirmed that commercial services will begin in 2025 once the final approval is granted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). The Noapara to Jai Hind stretch of the Yellow Line will provide easy access to the airport for residents of Kolkata and its surrounding areas. Once opened, Noapara station will also serve as the interchange point between the Blue Line (New Garia to Dakshineswar) and the under-construction Yellow Line. The Bimanbandar Metro Station will be the terminal station for the Kavi Subhas-Airport via Rajarhat Metro corridor.

The station complex, built over an expansive 22,238 sq. meters, will feature five underground platforms. Two platforms will serve each of the two corridors, and one additional platform will be designated for emergency use. The station’s design includes multiple entry/exit points, subways, lifts, and escalators to facilitate smooth passenger movement across three levels: Ground, Concourse, and Platform. This new Metro service will significantly reduce travel time for passengers heading to NSCBI Airport, providing a more convenient and efficient way to access one of Kolkata’s key transportation hubs. It will also ease the pressure on road traffic, offering a much-needed alternative for airport travelers. With the opening of this Metro stretch, Kolkata will move closer to a more modern and interconnected public transport system.
