Aadhaar services have remained unavailable in Mayakonda for several months, forcing residents from around 50 villages to travel to Anagodu or Davanagere for enrolment and updates, according to a report by Prajavani. Residents are seeking the immediate reopening of an Aadhaar centre at the Mayakonda Nadakacheri.
Mayakonda is a legislative constituency and hobli headquarters serving several surrounding villages. People requiring a new Aadhaar card or changes to their mobile number and personal details have reportedly been visiting the local centre only to find that services are not being provided. Many have had to return without completing their work, the report said.
The nearest alternative mentioned in the report is Anagodu, around 15 kilometres from Mayakonda. Residents travelling there are issued tokens, and services are provided only to those who receive them. If their work cannot be completed on the same day, they may have to make another trip, creating additional costs and delays.
For daily-wage workers, the travel involves giving up work for one or more days. Residents travelling to Davanagere face a longer journey. The disruption is also creating difficulties for elderly people who need Aadhaar enrolment or demographic and mobile-number updates but may not be able to make repeated trips to distant centres.
The local centre’s enrolment work had been handled by an operator named Prabhakar, who had worked there for several years. According to the report, the operator’s authorisation was not renewed after he did not pass the examination required for annual renewal. As a result, Aadhaar enrolment work at the Mayakonda centre stopped completely.
R. Ravi, deputy tahsildar of the Mayakonda Nadakacheri, said a representation had been submitted to the tahsildar seeking the appointment of another operator. He attributed the disruption to Prabhakar N. not passing the Aadhaar examination and said action was being sought to restart the service.
Jayaprakash B.K., president of the Kannada Yuva Shakti Kendra, said Aadhaar enrolment was an essential public service and called for the centre to be reopened quickly. Residents have also asked the concerned department to provide the equipment and other arrangements required to operate an Aadhaar enrolment facility at the Nadakacheri.
The report did not specify a date for the appointment of a replacement operator or the resumption of Aadhaar services in Mayakonda. Until an alternative operator is appointed and the centre becomes functional, residents from the surrounding villages will continue to depend on token-based services in Anagodu or travel to Davanagere.
