Mumbai’s First Cable-Stayed Overbridge at Reay Road Nears Completion

Mumbai is set to mark a significant milestone in its infrastructure development with the completion of the city’s first cable-stayed overbridge at Reay Road. This ₹273-crore project, launched on February 14, 2022, is part of a broader initiative led by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) to modernise Mumbai’s aging transport network. The Reay Road Overbridge is among the first in a series of new, high-tech bridges designed to replace the city’s old British-era structures.

Aimed at easing traffic congestion, the Reay Road overbridge will provide seamless connectivity by facilitating smooth vehicular movement through the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass. Additionally, it will ensure adequate clearance for vehicles passing under the Eastern Freeway, which has been a critical concern for traffic management in the area. What makes this bridge stand out is its modern cable-stayed design, which not only promises to improve traffic flow but also contributes to the city’s skyline. With architectural LED lighting integrated into the structure, the bridge will illuminate the area and add to Mumbai’s night-time aesthetics. The bridge will also be equipped with a bridge health monitoring system, ensuring that it remains safe and operational for years to come.

This overbridge is a key component of the ongoing citywide overhaul of Mumbai’s transport infrastructure. Along with the Reay Road project, work is also progressing on similar bridges in Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar. These new cable-stayed structures will replace the old, deteriorating ones, ensuring safer and more efficient roadways for Mumbai’s residents. With the Reay Road Overbridge nearing its commissioning, this is just one of the many steps towards modernising Mumbai’s transport network, ensuring smoother travel and better connectivity across the city.
