Pune Metro Line 3 Set for Inauguration as Phase 2 Expands

Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Shivajinagar with Hinjewadi, is scheduled to be inaugurated through a video conference led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 3, while the foundation stones for four new corridors under the network’s second phase are also set to be laid. The ceremonies will mark a significant expansion of Pune’s mass-transit system and its planned reach across western and eastern parts of the city.

The programme is scheduled for 12.30 pm, according to information shared by MahaMetro managing director Shravan Hardikar. The Maharashtra governor, chief minister, deputy chief ministers and other dignitaries are expected to attend the events. A public ceremony is also planned at the Krida Sankul in Balewadi, where citizens have been invited to participate.

Line 3, also referred to as the Pink Line, is the 23-kilometre corridor linking Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi. The connection is important for two major urban zones: Shivajinagar, a central transport and employment district, and Hinjewadi, which has developed into one of Pune’s principal information-technology and commercial hubs. The supplied announcement did not provide details on the line’s operational opening date, fare structure or service frequency.

The Phase 2 programme includes extensions to Line 2, which currently runs between Vanaz and Ramwadi. On the western side, the line is proposed to extend from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk. On the eastern side, the proposed extension would run from Ramwadi through Wagholi to Vitthalwadi. Together, these two extensions are expected to cover about 12 kilometres and include 13 stations, according to Hardikar.

The announcement also includes the foundation ceremony for Line 4. MahaMetro said the complete line would be approximately 29 kilometres long, with 27 stations proposed. The combined estimated cost of the Line 2 extensions and Line 4 is around Rs 13,500 crore. The announcement did not specify the corridor’s full alignment beyond the details provided for the Line 2 extensions, nor did it state construction deadlines or commissioning targets.

The proposed works would extend Pune Metro beyond its existing network and connect more neighbourhoods to the system. For residents, the eventual effect will depend on when the corridors are completed, how they connect with existing stations and whether services match travel demand between residential areas, employment centres and major interchange points. Those operational details were not included in the statement released ahead of the ceremonies.

Hardikar described the inauguration and foundation ceremonies as important steps in the expansion of Pune’s metro network and appealed to citizens to attend the Balewadi event. The scheduled November 3 programme is the next formal milestone for Line 3 and the Phase 2 projects.
