An unidentified man was found dead in Retibunder creek near Kharegaon Bridge on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway in the Kalwa area of Thane on November 2, prompting a recovery operation by the fire brigade and the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), civic officials said.
Authorities received information about the body at 12.21 pm, after which fire brigade personnel and TDRF teams reached the creek to conduct the rescue operation. The teams used a rescue vehicle and a utility vehicle to retrieve the body from the water.
The body was subsequently handed over to personnel from Narpoli Police Station, according to the civic authorities. It was sent to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Bhiwandi for further procedures. The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of the report.
Police have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death. The information released by the civic authorities did not specify how the man entered the creek or whether the death was being treated as accidental, natural or suspicious. Further details are expected to depend on the identification process and the findings of the medical examination.
Retibunder creek lies near a major road corridor linking Mumbai and Nashik, with Kharegaon Bridge serving as a prominent transport connection in the Thane region. The incident required a coordinated response from municipal emergency teams because the body was located in the creek and had to be recovered using specialised vehicles.
The recovery operation was completed after fire brigade and TDRF personnel reached the site. The body’s transfer to the hospital and the police investigation are the next formal steps recorded by the authorities. The deceased’s identity and the circumstances of the death remained under investigation.
