Ernakulam Rural Cyber Police have filed a chargesheet against YouTuber Mohammad Nihad, also known as Thoppi, in a case involving the alleged online publication of obscene content. The development marks the latest step in a cybercrime investigation that also raised questions about which police jurisdiction should handle the complaint.
According to the report by the Times of India, the case was registered on June 20, 2026, under provisions of the Information Technology Act and other relevant laws. The police alleged that Nihad shared nude images of some former friends on social media after a fallout with them.
The complaint was initially examined by Kochi city police. However, the city police reportedly found that the alleged offences did not fall within their territorial jurisdiction. Ernakulam Rural Police subsequently registered the case on the grounds that the alleged streaming of obscene content took place from Varapuzha, where Nihad was residing.
The jurisdictional sequence is significant to the case because the alleged activity involved online platforms while the police identified the location from which the content was allegedly streamed. The investigation therefore moved from a preliminary inquiry by Kochi city police to a formal case handled by Ernakulam Rural Police.
As part of the probe, the police approached YouTube and secured the takedown of the channel concerned, the report said. The action followed the allegation that obscene material had been published through online platforms. The supplied report does not specify the date on which the channel was removed or provide details of the material that was taken down.
Nihad later secured anticipatory bail in the case. The filing of a chargesheet means the police have completed the investigation stage described in the report and submitted their findings to the court. It does not by itself establish guilt, and the allegations remain subject to judicial consideration.
The case illustrates the operational challenge faced by police agencies when alleged online offences involve a complainant, an accused person, digital platforms and an internet connection located across different jurisdictions. In this matter, Ernakulam Rural Police based the registration of the case on Varapuzha as the location from which the alleged streaming occurred.
The chargesheet now places the case before the next stage of judicial proceedings. The Times of India report does not provide details of the chargesheet’s contents beyond the alleged publication of obscene material, the legal provisions invoked, the YouTube takedown, the anticipatory bail granted to Nihad and the territorial basis for the investigation.
