PNG Supply to 22 Northern Railway Facilities Begins in Delhi-NCR

Indraprastha Gas Limited has signed an agreement with the Delhi division of Northern Railway to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to 22 railway establishments across Delhi-NCR, replacing diesel and LPG in selected operational facilities. The agreement covers railway premises in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar and is expected to begin with PNG consumption of nearly 3,000 standard cubic metres per day.

The gas will be used for boiler operations at mechanised laundries located at Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations. The supply will also cover officers’ rest houses, base kitchens, running rooms, subordinate rest houses, and guard and travelling ticket examiner lobbies in the three districts.

According to IGL, the initial PNG consumption under the agreement will replace approximately 500 kg of LPG and 2,500 litres of diesel used each day. The company said the shift would simplify fuel handling, strengthen supply reliability and reduce dependence on conventional liquid fuels at the railway establishments.

The agreement forms part of the government’s PNG Drive 3.0 initiative, launched on October 1 to expand domestic and commercial piped-gas connections. The railway facilities included in the agreement represent a mix of passenger-facing and staff-support operations, including kitchens, accommodation facilities and laundries linked to railway stations.

IGL chairman Subhankar Sen said the agreement would facilitate the replacement of a substantial quantity of LPG with natural gas. He added that the transition would help reduce import dependence and the subsidy burden. IGL described the partnership as supporting the expansion of the natural-gas ecosystem and India’s transition towards a cleaner, convenient, cost-effective, continuous, secure and sustainable energy system.

The operational change will shift fuel supply at the covered facilities from the delivery and storage of liquid fuels towards a piped connection model. The supplied information does not specify the implementation schedule for each establishment, the investment required for connectivity or the projected reduction in emissions from the substitution.

Pushpesh Raman Tripathi, divisional railway manager of Northern Railway’s Delhi division, said plans were under way to extend PNG connectivity to railway hospitals and residential colonies in the future. The present agreement, however, is limited to the 22 establishments identified by IGL and Northern Railway.
