Treated Water Replaces 1.5 Lakh Litres Daily at Telangana Secretariat

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has begun supplying treated wastewater through designated Green Tankers for gardening and landscaping at the Telangana Secretariat, replacing about 1.5 lakh litres of freshwater every day.

HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy flagged off the tankers on Sunday, according to a press release cited by Telangana Today. The initiative is intended to reduce the use of freshwater for landscape maintenance at one of the city’s major government establishments.

The treated water is being supplied for the Secretariat’s landscape garden. Officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board said the measure would promote the reuse of treated wastewater and support more responsible water use in public spaces.

A similar arrangement is already being used at the Greenlands Guest House in Begumpet, the official residence of Telangana’s chief secretary. Treated water supplied there replaces about 30,000 litres of freshwater each day, the report said.

Taken together, the two initiatives replace approximately 1.8 lakh litres of freshwater daily for gardening and landscaping. The figures provided by officials refer to freshwater use avoided through the two arrangements; the supplied report does not provide details on the treatment facility, tanker capacity, supply frequency or the quality-monitoring system used before the water is applied.

The move places the Telangana Secretariat among public establishments using treated wastewater for non-potable purposes. Landscape maintenance is a regular demand on urban water systems, particularly at large institutional campuses, where treated water can be used instead of freshwater when the relevant treatment and distribution arrangements are available.

The initiative also brings HMDA and HMWSSB into a shared operational role. HMDA is supplying the Green Tankers, while the water utility’s managing director flagged off the service. The agencies said the programme was intended to encourage other government institutions and public establishments to adopt water recycling and sustainable urban-development practices.

The official statement described the Secretariat’s use of treated wastewater as an example for other institutions. The next stage, according to the information available in the report, is continued supply for landscape maintenance at the Secretariat and the Greenlands Guest House, with officials using the programme to promote wider reuse of treated wastewater in public spaces.
