Pune’s Metro Expansion PCMC to Nigdi Extension Starts

The much-awaited extension of the Pune Metro from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Nigdi has received the necessary permissions for groundwork from both the PCMC and the traffic police, paving the way for construction to begin. This extension marks the first major expansion of the Metro project following the recent launch of the Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate corridors.

Key Infrastructure Developments
The Metro extension will span 4.5 km, with new stations planned at Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk. The viaduct will be supported by approximately 150 pillars, with foundation work already underway at various locations between Pimpri and Nigdi. The project is expected to be completed within the next two-and-a-half to three years.

Strategic Importance for Commuters
The extension to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk is anticipated to benefit numerous commuters, particularly those working in the industrial zones of Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. Additionally, students heading to educational institutions in these areas from Pune will also find the new Metro service highly convenient.

Clearances and Land Allocation
The groundwork for the extension began in July, and Maha Metro has now received the go-ahead for work in most locations, particularly along the old Mumbai-Pune highway. Maha Metro is also in talks with the PCMC and state government for land allocation for station entry-exit points. Once the land discussions are finalised, construction will proceed smoothly.

Public Sentiment on Delay
While the extension is a welcome development, regular commuters have expressed concerns over the delay in the project. Akash Shinde, a frequent traveller from Pune to Nigdi, noted that commuters would have to wait at least three more years for Metro services beyond Pimpri, as this extension was not part of the original Swargate-PCMC corridor.
