The Khairatabad zone of Hyderabad City Police has trained one woman constable from each police station in motorcycle riding and deployed them for regular field patrolling, in a move to expand women’s participation in frontline policing.
DCP Khairatabad K Shilpa Valli said the initiative was intended to move women personnel beyond station-based responsibilities such as reception and writing work and involve them more actively in operational policing. “Women police personnel should be equally visible and actively involved in frontline policing,” she said.
The deployment gives each police station in the Khairatabad zone at least one woman constable trained to use a motorcycle for patrol duties. The police said the arrangement would expand the operational responsibilities of women constables and provide greater flexibility in field deployment.
The initiative also has a public-access objective. According to the DCP, the presence of more women personnel on city streets could make it easier for women to approach the police, particularly those who may feel more comfortable seeking assistance from women officers. The police said increased visibility of women in patrol teams could encourage more women to contact the department directly.
The move places women constables in a more visible role within the routine functioning of the city’s police force. Rather than limiting their work largely to police-station duties, the deployment links them to regular field operations and street-level engagement with residents.
The police said the change would also improve the use of available personnel. Motorcycle patrols can allow officers to move through local areas and respond to routine public-facing policing requirements without being restricted to station premises. The source report did not specify the number of police stations covered, patrol routes, deployment schedules or the duration of the training.
The DCP described the initiative as a small operational change with a wider institutional purpose: having more women on patrol and making policing more accessible to the public. The police said it would also support stronger engagement between officers and communities in the Khairatabad zone.
Further details on the patrol teams’ schedules, areas of operation and any expansion of the programme were not provided in the announcement.
