Pune PMC Clears Ambedkar Statue and Poona Pact Memorial Proposal

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee has approved a proposal to install a full-size statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and develop a memorial and museum linked to the historical legacy of the Poona Pact in Pune. The proposal will now be placed before the PMC General Body for consideration and approval.

The initiative was moved by corporator and Standing Committee member Suhas Vijay Tingre. According to Tingre, the proposal seeks to preserve historical documents related to the Poona Pact while creating a public institution to explain the circumstances and significance of the agreement to future generations.

The proposal includes a full-size statue of Dr Ambedkar as a mark of respect for his contribution to India. It also envisages giving impetus to the concept of a memorial and museum dedicated to the historic event. The material available does not specify the proposed location, project cost, land parcel, design, construction timeline or the agency that would be responsible for operating the proposed museum.

Tingre said the Poona Pact has significance in the context of social equality, political representation and the rights of marginalised communities. The proposal, as described, aims to use the memorial and museum to create wider public awareness, particularly among younger generations, about the agreement and the historical circumstances surrounding it.

The proposal also places the project within Pune’s wider role as a city associated with important moments in India’s social and political history. Its stated purpose is not limited to installing a statue; it also includes preserving documents and presenting the ideas associated with the Poona Pact through a dedicated memorial and museum.

Tingre said the ideals of equality, liberty, fraternity and social justice advocated by Dr Ambedkar should reach every section of society. He added that initiatives of this nature could help preserve Pune’s historical heritage and promote awareness of the contributions and thoughts of social reformers.

The Standing Committee’s approval is an administrative step and does not amount to final clearance for implementation. The next stage is consideration by the PMC General Body. If the General Body approves the proposal, further administrative proceedings will follow. Details such as the location, budget, project framework and implementation schedule will therefore depend on subsequent decisions by the civic body.
