Omron has inaugurated its first India manufacturing facility in Chennai, with plans to expand annual production of blood-pressure machines from 300,000 to more than 3 million within the first year as the Japanese company deepens its healthcare manufacturing presence in the country.
The facility is a dedicated unit for Omron Healthcare, the company’s medical devices arm. Its current capacity is intended for the domestic market, while the company has also indicated that the Chennai plant could eventually produce goods for export to European markets.
Omron had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in 2023 to establish the facility with a proposed investment of ₹128 crore. The company previously supplied medical devices to India through imports from its factory in Vietnam, but executives said local production would reduce delivery times from about three weeks to a single day.
Ayumu Okada, President and CEO of Omron Healthcare, said at the inauguration that domestic production would help the company expand its market share in India, which is currently around 40 per cent. The Chennai facility is initially focused on blood-pressure machines, with plans to add nebulisers and other product categories over time.
Okada described India as one of Omron Healthcare’s fastest-growing markets. She linked the company’s expansion to the country’s growing healthcare requirements, noting that cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes have emerged as leading causes of death in India.
The company’s decision to manufacture locally places Chennai within the expanding medical-device production ecosystem supported by industrial investment and domestic demand. For hospitals, pharmacies and consumers, the immediate operational change identified by Omron is shorter delivery time for its products. The company said the current production capacity is fully directed towards the Indian market.
The inauguration was also attended by Junta Tsujinaga, President and CEO of Omron Corporation. The Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed group operates across industrial automation, healthcare, public infrastructure and data solutions.
Omron’s expansion comes as India’s medical-devices market grows alongside greater health awareness and policy support for domestic production. Industry estimates cited in the report value the sector at approximately $12 billion to $15 billion, with projections of growth to $50 billion by 2030.
The Chennai plant’s proposed addition of nebulisers and other product categories will determine how far the facility develops beyond blood-pressure equipment. Omron has not provided an exact timeline for exports to European markets, but said exports are planned over time as the local manufacturing operation expands.
