Ahmedabad Drainage Upgrade Targets Chronic Choking in East Zones

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has connected a 600-mm rising line from the existing Jivannwadi drainage pumping station in Thakkarbapanagar to a new trunk main laid using micro-tunnelling technology, in a move aimed at reducing recurring drainage choking, backflow and leakage in the city’s eastern areas.

The work was carried out under the guidance of Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot and Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, according to a report by Sandesh. The connection will allow the new line to be used at its full capacity and enable the pumping station to operate more efficiently.

The affected areas include Nikol, Gopal Chowk, Thakkarbapanagar and Viratnagar. These neighbourhoods have faced repeated drainage choking and backflow, while leakage in the rising line has also been a recurring issue. The municipal corporation said the new connection is intended to provide relief from these problems.

The project also reduces the load on an existing 1,600-mm trunk main. AMC said lowering the pressure on the older line would improve the functioning of the wider drainage network and support the rehabilitation of the existing trunk main.

Micro-tunnelling was used to lay the new drainage line and to support the diversion of flow away from the older trunk main. The method allowed the corporation to connect the pumping station to the new infrastructure without relying only on conventional open excavation, although the supplied report does not provide details of the project’s cost, construction period or the length of the new line.

AMC said residents in three wards would receive direct benefits from the work. The estimated beneficiary population is approximately 2.25 lakh, or 225,000 people. For households and businesses in the surrounding areas, the immediate operational objective is to reduce disruptions associated with overflowing or backed-up drainage lines and recurring leakage.

The project is part of the corporation’s effort to strengthen drainage infrastructure in east Ahmedabad by increasing network capacity and rehabilitating older assets. The supplied report does not specify the next monitoring schedule or provide performance data after the connection. The corporation’s stated next step is to operate the pumping station through the new line while reducing the burden on the existing trunk main.
