Namma Metro services on Bengaluru’s Purple Line were briefly disrupted on October 30 after a passenger entered the tracks at Indiranagar station, triggering emergency safety systems and delaying trains during the morning peak. The passenger was safely rescued, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
The incident occurred at 9.22 a.m., BMRCL said. The Emergency Trip System and Emergency Stop Plunger were activated as a precautionary measure after the passenger entered the track area.
Purple Line services were delayed by approximately 10 minutes following the incident. Train operations on the Purple and Green lines were normalised by 9.40 a.m., according to the metro operator.
The disruption also affected passengers using the Kempegowda Majestic interchange, where commuters transfer between the Purple and Green lines. A few Green Line trains were regulated to prevent overcrowding at the interchange station while the situation was being addressed.
The Purple Line is one of Bengaluru’s busiest metro corridors, connecting key parts of the city across the east-west axis. Indiranagar is a major station on the corridor, serving a densely developed neighbourhood with offices, commercial establishments and residential areas. A brief operational interruption during peak hours can therefore affect passengers beyond the station where the incident occurs, particularly at Majestic, the network’s main interchange.
The activation of the Emergency Trip System and Emergency Stop Plunger temporarily interrupted train operations to secure the track area. Such systems are designed to stop or restrict train movement when an immediate safety risk is detected. BMRCL did not indicate that any passenger was injured in the incident.
The episode also comes against a wider record of track-related incidents on Bengaluru’s metro network. According to the report, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has recorded 59 such incidents since 2012. The supplied report did not provide a further breakdown of those incidents or specify how they were classified.
For commuters, the immediate effect was a short delay on the Purple Line and controlled operations on parts of the Green Line. Passengers changing trains at Majestic faced the possibility of additional waiting and crowding while services were regulated.
BMRCL said normal train operations on both lines had resumed by 9.40 a.m. after the passenger was rescued and the emergency safety response was completed.
