A fire broke out in the servant’s quarters of a flat on the 27th floor of Tower 3 at Kolkata’s South City Complex on Friday morning, prompting the deployment of seven fire engines. No casualties have been reported, and fire officials said no one was trapped inside the high-rise.
Residents and local people first noticed black smoke emerging from the building in the upscale residential complex in south Kolkata. The smoke caused alarm in the area, after which the fire brigade was alerted and emergency crews were sent to the site.
According to fire brigade sources cited in the report, the blaze was confined to a residence on the 27th floor of Tower 3. Residents were brought out of the building safely while fire personnel worked to control the flames. The report said there was no information of anyone being trapped inside the tower.
Local residents initially attempted to bring the fire under control before the fire brigade arrived. The seven engines then took charge of the response and extinguished the blaze, according to the report. The incident highlights the operational challenge of responding to fires in high-rise residential buildings, where emergency access and evacuation require coordinated action between residents, building management, police and fire services.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Fire officials are expected to begin an investigation after the site is declared fully safe. The report also said the extent of damage inside the flat had not been determined at the time of publication.
Police and fire department officials were monitoring the situation after the flames were brought under control. Further details about the cause of the fire, the condition of the affected residence and the assessment of property damage are expected to emerge after the investigation.
