Kalyan-Dombivli Launches SAANS Campaign to Tackle Childhood Pneumonia

In a significant step to combat childhood pneumonia, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has launched the Social Awareness and Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) campaign. Running from November 12 to February 28, this initiative aims to raise awareness about the early detection and treatment of pneumonia in children under five years of age.

Childhood pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of mortality among young children, especially in the age group of 1 to 5 years. Often beginning as a minor infection, it can escalate into a severe and life-threatening illness if left untreated. Through the SAANS campaign, KDMC is working to address this critical public health concern by educating parents and guardians about recognising symptoms and seeking timely medical intervention. Deepa Shukl, Medical Officer from KDMC’s Health Department, highlighted the symptoms parents should watch out for, including persistent cough, cold, rapid breathing, fever, and chest tightness. “We urge parents to take their children to the nearest doctor at the earliest sign of these symptoms. Early intervention can prevent complications and save lives,” she stated.

The campaign operates under the tagline, “Pneumonia nahi, toh bachpan sahi” (No pneumonia, a healthy childhood), emphasising the importance of a disease-free childhood. KDMC’s health teams are actively disseminating information across the twin cities of Kalyan and Dombivli, encouraging residents to seek immediate treatment for children displaying symptoms. The initiative also includes outreach programmes in schools, anganwadis, and public health centres to educate families on pneumonia prevention, treatment options, and the significance of timely vaccinations. KDMC officials are also leveraging the local community health network to ensure that no child is left behind in this fight against pneumonia. This yearly campaign forms part of KDMC’s broader commitment to improving child health outcomes and reducing preventable deaths. By raising awareness and providing access to early treatment, the SAANS initiative aims to neutralise pneumonia as a threat to childhood well-being. With its proactive measures and community involvement, KDMC is setting a precedent for tackling childhood illnesses, ensuring healthier futures for the youngest members of society.
