MMRDA to Begin Phase 3 of Airoli-Katai Naka Road Project Soon

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is all set to commence work on Phase 3 of the Airoli-Katai Naka Road Project. With a contract value of INR 1981.17 crore, this phase includes constructing a crucial elevated road between National Highway 4 (NH-4) and Katai Naka. The project, spanning 12.3 kilometers, aims to revolutionize connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The Airoli-Katai Naka Road Project is divided into three phases. Phase 1 includes a 3.43-kilometre stretch featuring a 0.94-km elevated road and a 1.68-km twin tunnel through Parsik Hill. Nearly 90% complete, it is expected to be operational by October next year, with a revised cost of INR 556 crore. Phase 2 features a 3+3 lane elevated road connecting Thane Belapur Road and Airoli Bridge. Currently, 75% of the work is completed, with an updated cost of INR 395 crore. Phase 3, the largest and most ambitious phase, features an elevated road linking NH-4 and Katai Naka and is expected to take 48 months to complete.

Once completed, the project will reduce travel distance between Mulund and Katai Naka by 7-8 kilometers and slash travel time by up to an hour during peak traffic. It is also expected to decongest major arterial roads, including Thane-Mumbra-Kalyan Phata-Shil-Kalyan Road, Mankhurd-Vashi-Mahape-Mahal-Kalyan Road, Shil Kalyan Road, and Thane-Belapur Road. The project will facilitate faster and more efficient connectivity between Mumbai, Thane, and the rapidly developing areas of Kalyan and Badlapur.

The project incorporates advanced infrastructure, such as multi-lane elevated roads and tunnels, ensuring seamless travel for thousands of daily commuters. The elevated roads and tunnels will alleviate congestion at critical intersections, supporting the region’s growing infrastructure needs. Phases 1 and 2 are expected to be operational by October 2025, with Phase 3 set to conclude within 48 months. The entire project will not only save travel time but also bolster economic activity by improving logistics and reducing commuting stress. This transformative project underscores MMRDA’s commitment to enhancing mobility and decongesting Mumbai’s ever-busy roads. With improved connectivity and reduced travel time, it marks a significant step forward in the city’s urban development.
