Hosur Road Gets Major Boost as K-RIDE Launches 61-Metre Girders

K-RIDE has launched two 61-metre-long railway girders over Hosur Road near Chandapura in southern Bengaluru, marking a major construction milestone for the 48-km Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project and clearing the way for future improvements to one of the city’s busiest southern corridors.

The Rail Infrastructure Development Company Karnataka launched the two Open Web Girders at railway overbridge Number 470 on NH-44. Each girder weighs about 245 metric tonnes. K-RIDE said the first girder was launched on October 10 and the second on October 28, making them the longest girders it has launched for a railway doubling project in Bengaluru.

The girders will accommodate both the up and down railway lines on a common substructure. Their long-span design removes the need for an intermediate pier within the highway span, allowing traffic to pass under the railway bridge without an obstruction in the middle of the road, according to K-RIDE.

The launch required a specialised winch-based pulling system and temporary staging arrangements made with ISMB 600 steel sections. The construction method was used to move the large steel structures into position over the highway while maintaining the required span for road traffic below.

The bridge work is part of the Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project, which covers 48 km. K-RIDE has set a target of completing the project by January 2027. The agency described the girder launch as a significant milestone in the project’s progress.

The railway overbridge is also linked to the future expansion of Hosur Road. After the associated railway works are completed, the existing bridge is demolished and necessary improvements are carried out, the highway can be expanded to 12 lanes, K-RIDE said. The proposed expansion is intended to reduce congestion on the stretch near Chandapura.

The sequence links railway construction to the operation of a major road corridor. The existing bridge must remain part of the project’s implementation sequence until the railway works, demolition and related improvements are completed. K-RIDE’s January 2027 target therefore covers not only the railway doubling project but also the wider set of works required around the bridge and highway interface.

For commuters and freight movement on Hosur Road, the immediate development is the installation of the two long girders rather than the opening of a new road span. The final traffic benefits will depend on completion of the remaining railway works, the demolition of the existing bridge and the highway improvements identified by K-RIDE.

K-RIDE’s next stated milestone is completion of the Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project by January 2027. The agency has not provided, in the available statement, a separate completion date for the demolition of the existing bridge or the expansion of Hosur Road to 12 lanes.
