Pune police have begun legal and disciplinary action against a 39-year-old woman constable after a video allegedly showed her driving a car in the wrong direction in the Manjari area while wearing police uniform. The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 27 October, and prompted intervention after citizens circulated footage on social media.
According to information reported by Pudhari – Pune, the car was allegedly being driven at high speed against the direction of traffic. Other motorists reportedly stopped their vehicles after seeing the car approach from the wrong side. Citizens who questioned the driver found that she was wearing a police uniform, while the vehicle did not have a number plate.
The Pune police administration took note of the video and identified the woman seen in it, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone 6 Jeevan Benival said, according to the report. Police officials said a first information report would be registered and that orders were being issued to suspend the constable.
The constable is posted at Kalepadal police station. Senior officers said she was on leave at the time of the incident and had not attended duty on Sunday and Monday. They also clarified that police personnel are not permitted to wear their official uniform during leave.
The report said the constable may have been returning after attending a party with friends in the Bund Garden area. That detail was presented as a possibility in the source report and has not been established as a confirmed finding. Police are continuing the legal process through the Manjari police station.
The case involves two separate administrative concerns: the alleged road-safety violation and the reported use of police uniform while off duty. The absence of a number plate on the vehicle is also part of the police inquiry. The available report does not state whether a breathalyser test was conducted, the exact alcohol reading, or the specific sections proposed in the FIR.
Police have sought the constable’s service-related information from Kalepadal police station and said her statement would be recorded. The next formal steps are the registration of the FIR, completion of the police inquiry and disciplinary action based on the findings. Until those proceedings are completed, the allegations against the constable remain subject to investigation.
