Kolkata Firecracker Rules Set Two-Hour Diwali Window, Ban Silent-Zone Bursting

The West Bengal administration has limited firecracker bursting to two hours on Diwali night and prohibited it within 100 metres of hospitals, educational institutions, and old-age homes, following a high-level meeting in Nabanna on October 29. The restrictions will apply in Kolkata and across the state during Kali Puja and Diwali.

According to the state Home Secretary, firecrackers may be burst only between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali. The administration said the decision was taken due to recurring complaints about noise pollution during Kali Puja and Diwali, emphasising public awareness and official monitoring.

Only green firecrackers will be permitted, while other types cannot be used, according to the statement made after the meeting. The administration has also designated a separate two-hour window for Chhath Puja, allowing firecrackers from 6 pm to 8 pm.

The prohibition in silent zones covers areas within 100 metres of hospitals, educational institutions, and old-age homes. The administration has barred the setting up of firecracker markets in residential areas and plans extensive monitoring from factories to retail shops. Senior officials attending the meeting stressed enforcement to ensure public safety and reduce pollution.
